If you thought you couldn’t afford a Bluetooth GPS unit, think again!
Like a lot of emergent technologies, the marketplace for GPS units is changing so rapidly that what was true six months ago is no longer true today. With the way prices have dropped, there are certain features you might have thought were out of your reach, but which are actually comfortably within your price range.
If you thought you would love to have the convenience of Bluetooth on your GPS receiver, but thought it was too expensive, you might be in for a pleasant surprise!
But before I launch into who carries Bluetooth and what are the best models with Bluetooth, let’s talk a little about the marketplace in general. Then we’ll discuss Bluetooth, and I’ll make some recommendations.
Although there are a ton of GPS manufacturers, there are three in the United States who dominate the whole market. These three are (in order) Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan.
Garmin controls about half the U. S. market, while Tom Tom and Magellan essentially each have about 20% market share. That means these three companies sell almost 90% of the GPS’s sold in the U. S. For that reason, I’m going to stick to talking about products made by these three big companies.
Now, let’s turn our consideration to Bluetooth, what it is and what it does for you.
Bluetooth is a technology that lets electronic communication devices “talk” to one another. I can download pictures from my cell phone straight to my computer using Bluetooth, for instance. Or, if I’m in traffic and I don’t want one hand constantly holding my cell phone I can get my signal routed to a little device I wear on my ear. That way I can drive and talk at the same time–hands free!
That’s the magic of Bluetooth!
Driving in heavy traffic and talking on one of those Bluetooth devices tends to work out well. But what if we add another complex electronic device into the mix? What if in addition to driving and talking, you need to be hearing directions from your GPS device?
Well, balancing two complex electronic devices while driving is just too much. Wouldn’t it be great if you could merge the cell phone with the GPS, so that you could drive and then just have to pay attention to just one other device.
(In heavy traffic, you probably just want to pay attention to the traffic, by the way!)
Well, if your GPS also supports Bluetooth, you can do all your talking actually through your GPS device. You’ll never have to even touch your cell phone this way!
Okay, here’s where the misconception is.
It wasn’t that long ago that Bluetooth capability would set you back $500 or $600!
But, as with all electronic devices, GPS prices have taken a nose dive lately.
Now, you can get Bluetooth for slightly over $200 from the industry leader, Garmin! Tom Tom offers Bluetooth for slightly over $300!
So, the truth about buying a Bluetooth GPS unit is it’s within the reach of virtually everyone who can afford a GPS unit of any kind!
